Only as the last Volvo F86 models reached the autumn of their years did I take the wheel and belatedly realise that this was a damn decent truck. Its small but airy tilt cab, flexible 7-litre lump, easy eight-speed synchromesh gearshift and sheer driveability contrasts with British kit spanning the gamut of non-achievement from indifferent to shed. Popular with its drivers, the F86 was overshadowed by its larger, iconic F88 brother. Yet, in its modest way, it did much to educate us as to what was possible when manufacturers made an effort. European colleagues thought Brits were mad to use a unit designed for medium distances on long haul, but then they weren’t used to sleeping across seats...
