POLICE IN Newcastle upon Tyne have made an arrest in connection with a string of arson attacks in which at least 18 haulage yards were torched over almost five years.

A man from the west of Newcastle was arrested in connection with the spate of attacks on North-East yards between 1998 and 2002.

Duncan Bennett of Northumbria police says the man was arrested on 7 December and bailed pending further enquiries.

Operator Owen Pugh of Dudley, Tyne & Wear had 10 trucks worth £500,000 destroyed on 8 September 2001.

General manager Stewart G ringer says any progress in the case would he welcome: "Until someone was caught there was the worry they'd come back, but there has been nothing for a long time. "It makes you wonder where this person has been," he adds. "Lots of companies, one after another, were getting targeted. Then it went quiet.

"It was a regular occurrence in the area until 2002. It seems strange that the attacks stopped."

The serial arson attacks resulted in a total of over El7rn in lost revenue. One of the last hauliers to be hit was F3enfield Motors in May 2002. The attack on its yard destroyed 16 vehicles, including vans, at a cost of £300,000.
