Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MY LOCAL MP, David Kidney, recently invited Transport Minister Dr Stephen Ladyman to meet the people of Stafford and talk about the future of the M6 — either widening the existing M6 or building a new M6 toll road.

As things stand, there are no plans set in stone — the M6 widening has been surveyed but the toll road has no survey or plans drawn up. A choice will be made this summer, but we are told that it won't be ready for use until 2017— 12 years away.

This particular piece of M6 motorway is crucial to all road users, not just hauliers in the area, and is a central piece of the national network. By the time anything is built, the current road will be gridlocked. A toll road will be a rich man's corridor.

We have 12 years to wait for these improvements. So why not do the job properly?

Build a new motorway from Warrington to Whitchurch-Telford and back out on the M5 at the junction with the M42, Just look at the map— draw the line and you will see it gives a natural alternative North-South route. It takes a lot of traffic out of the Birmingham area. It brings mid-Wales into the motorway network and relieves a lot of villages of traffic.

I ask you all as hauliers to lobby your MPs and negotiate with the powers that be to get this motorway built. It affects every long-distance transport company in the UK and it's now that we have to make our voices heard, because in six months' time the decision will be made.

If we all stick together, we will be able to influence the government.
