ONE vehicle operated by a Croydon, Surrey, company was suspended for 14 days by the Metropolitan LA, Mr. D. I. R. Muir, following a hearing in London on Monday. The company, R. Simmonds & Sons (Contractors) Ltd., was called before the LA because of three immediate prohibitions on its vehicles earlier in the year. Several other cases were on the company's records, it was said.

Mr. Muir told the managing director, Mr. A. G. Simmonds, that the matter was a serious one. In evidence, however, Mr. Simmonds said that his maintenance facilities were good, and this was supported by the vehicle examiner's report. Maintenance bills totalled over £4,000 last year, and more thorough methods had been implemented since the prohibitions had been received.

Mr. Simmonds apologised, and asked Mr. Muir if an examiner could come and give him some advice on organizing his maintenance. Vehicle examiners were not there to give free advice, said Mr. Muir, but he agreed to the request on this occasion, as he thought Mr. Simmonds was genuinely trying to improve matters.

General goods 200-mile grant

METROPOLITAN LA, Mr. D. L R. Muir, on Monday granted A. Dowel and Sons an A-licence variation to add an articulated vehicle for the amended conditions of "general goods in Britain, within 200 miles of base".

"I need this to help me stop letting people down", said Mr. A. Dowell, managing director. He produced three witnesses against the only objector, British Railways.
