Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW device, knownas the Autopulse, has been produced, being designed for the purpose of raising petrol from a tank to the carburetter. The apparatus consists of an electrically operated pump of special design, and is said to embody many features which are improvements on those systems in which gravity, vacuum or pressure are used for this purpose. The apparatus is shown in our illustration with its outer chamber member removed.

The lower part of the pump is a coil Avbidi actuates a belluws, similar to those used in thermostats, into which the petrol is drawn through a strainer and a valve situated in the centre of the bellows. On the rising of the bellows, the central valve closes and the petrel is discharged through a valve situated near the outlet pipe. Special electric arrangements are provided to produce a regular movement of the bellows, which we have not space here to describe.

About 5,000 strokes of the bellows are made to the gallon of fuel at the rate of 800 to 1,000 per minute, maximum capacity. When, however, air is being pumped for the purpose of raising the petrol in the first place, the length of stroke is doubled and the rate of speed is increased to 2,500 per minute. Should the bellows be capable of delivering more than the carburetter can take, the resistance of the needle of the carburetter when it closes the delivery opening is sufficient te prevent the bellews from collapsing, and no more fuel will be c:elivered until some of the petrol already in the carburetter is used up. •

Some of the advantages claimed for this device are as follow :—It will fill the carburetter before the engine is started ; it is self-priming, as it will draw air until the petrol arrives at the carburetter ; the amount of petrol stored in

the apparatus is so small that the danger of fire is reduced ; the action of the pump can instantly be stopped by switching off, and there are no wearing parts or pistons to stick.
