A corrupt transport manager from road and rail giant Freightliner has been jailed for a year after he accepted a bribe from a local truck rental firm to ensure that Elm in business went its way.

Malcolm Anderson, road strategy manager for eight of Freightliner's inland terminals, pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to accepting corrupt payments from Leeds-based Brown Vehicle Rentals in return for his backing when contracts were awarded.

Adrian Clarke, who was running Brown's for its owner Richard Brown, agreed to pay Anderson a total of 225,000 to ensure that he secured deals worth more than Lim to supply Freightliner with additional vehicles and drivers. A series of payments totalling 223,000 were disguised as bogus invoices made through a third company set up by Anderson, until suspicions were raised and an internal investigation took place.

Sentencing Anderson, Judge Peter Charlesworth said that bribery was not acceptable and must be dealt with seriously by the courts. He said that it was clear that Anderson had instigated the corruption and that while business may have been awarded to Brown's legitimately he had demanded the money and made arrangements for false invoices.

Clarke also admitted corruption and was ordered to pay 23,000 costs and complete a 240hour community punishment order.

A spokesperson for Freightliner declined to comment.
