• Motorway service operator Moto has hit back at claims that Willi Betz drivers pay less for parking than others, after furious UK drivers pointed out that trucks are parked up for "days on end".

Drivers told CM that they are often unable to get on to Mote's parking areas while Willi Betz vehicles stay for weeks at a time.

But a spokesman for Moto insists that the German company pays the "going rate" for parking. According to Moto, Willi Betz signed a national agreement two years ago in order to solve the historic problem of the company not paying its parking dues. The German haulage giant now pays "a substantial amount in advance for its vehicles to park at our sites", says Moto.

On the issue of parking availability, UK drivers claim that they are being disadvantaged at some key Moto sites because they are crammed with long-stay Willi Betz trucks.

Driver Tim Smith, who has noticed that Willi Betz vehicles are parked for days at a time at Birch Services on the M62 near Manchester, is annoyed. "It's disgusting—sometimes our drivers cannot get on to the Moto sites. Often we have to park on industrial estates."

Another driven Nick Neustedd, makes a similar claim about Moto's services on the M4 near Cardiff.

An official statement from Moto says the nature of Betz' operation means that long stays are unavoidable: "While we recognise this can be frustrating for other drivers seeking to park up for the night, the same facility is available to any HGV driver, or haulage company, willing to pay the required parking fees."
