Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Mr Smith, Fiction

I have always felt criticism of Eastern Area TO Geoffrey Simms to be unfair—he has a very responsible job to do, which often involves difficult decisions. But the report 'HGV denied for breach of trust' (CM 25-31 July) does make you wonder.

I speak of Thomas Smith of Spalding, who has served a two-year prison sentence and had his truck impounded. Now Mr Simms refuses to renew his HGV licencei How many punishments must Mr Smith endure? Up to his lapse he is had a good record, after all.

As for Mr Simm's comment on international drivers being potential lawbreakers, I find this most offensive.

Look at this government— how many ministers have resigned in dubious circumstances? Some have fallen from grace on more than one occasion. So does Mr Simms think that these people, in addition to losing their ministerial posts, should be barred from being MPs as weV. I think not.

I would urge Mr Smith of Spalding to appeal to a tribunal in order to get his licence restored, as it is in no one's interest for him to be denied it. Then he can continue his rehab programme and lead a useful life when released from prison.
