• Birmingham-based bodybuilder the Carlyle Group has introduced a new welfare vehicle which it hopes will double its community vehicle output. The vehicle, which was completed last week, uses an existing body style based on the Iveco Ford 49.10. Sheffield City Council has already ordered 10.
It is the first time the Carlyle Group has built welfare vehicles on an Iveco Ford chassis, although it has produced minibuses on the marque. The vehicle seats up to 20 and costs e35,000, which includes a rear folding Ricon wheelchair lift. Carlyle currently produces about 25 welfare units a year out of a total of 250 vehicles.
Sheffield City Council, which takes delivery of its order at the end of the month, says it plans to replace another 16 of its 150strong fleet; it would not say if Carlyle would be given the order. About 80% of Sheffield City Council's fleet are based on Iveco Ford chassis.
