Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

UR INDEPENDENT and unannounced survey of rental and )ntract-hire vehicles has revealed some disturbing facts. In iort it means that the service supplied by many companies is no means what it should be.

The condition of the vehicles is better than in our previous Jrvey, but it still is not up to scratch. The standard of counter ;rvice has, if anything, deteriorated.

Operators who use self-drive vehicles to meet peak ..mands and the user who requires a "one-off" vehicle should a more demanding, in our view.

It must always be remembered that the hirer has nothing to iswer for in law. He may lose a proportion of business, but he in soon make this up. The operator and the driver are most at sk.

An unroadworthy vehicle jeopardises the operator's licence, ut the hiring company doesn't run this risk.

To present a driver with a new vehicle without familiarising im with it is deplorable. To ignore the fact that a tachograph operative borders on "accessory to crime".

Such indiscriminate use of vehicles and abuse of the law lould be punishable. We believe that hiring companies nould be licensed to operate.

To learn, as we did, that a vehicle is not available is i'esponsible. Any operator left without a vehicle he has hired advance, loses revenue and goodwill without recourse to 'le source of failure.

There should be redress, and the hiring company should be lade liable for a loss of use claim on proof that revenue and oodwill were sacrificed.

The legitimate road transport operator has problems nough without the burden of those imposed by outside gencies.

If, as we believe, our survey is epresentative of the total narket, then we urge the /linister to turn his attention to his matter without delay.
