PROGRESS in electric vehicle design in 73 years has enabled the range on a charge to be doubled and maximum speed to be trebled but at the cost of reduced payload capacity.

On Route, published by National Carriers, includes a picture of a crude electric van run by the Great Western Railway in 1908 and having a range of 25 miles, a speed of up to 13mph and a load capacity of 2 tons. The vans now being operated by National Carriers can travel up to 50 miles a day, have a maximum speed of 40mph but a payload capacity of only 35cwt.
