The utility vehicle that mixture of car and commercial which Still causes such legal gymnastics in the spheres Of definition and traffic law—had Antipodean beginnings, according to a piece I've just been reading about the Ford Motor Company of Australia, which is celebrating its golden jubilee.
The innovatory event was said to have occurred in 1934, when a farmer wrote to the company saying he wanted a vehicle in which he .could take his pigs to market during the week and his rwife to church on Sundays.
The result was a "utility coupe " from which other varieties of the breed have sprung.
