PID growth in a haulage siness can have as disastrous effect upon the maintenance vehicles as a lack of finan d resources, said the Yorkire deputy LA, Mr N. F. aody, at Sheffield last week. Mr Moody was suspending e vehicle for three months mi the 0 licence held by W. Simpson, of Harcistoft, resterfield; Mr Simpson held licence for six vehicles and ur trailers in possession, 'al one trailer to be acquired. Mr R. J. Manning, .vehicle .aminer, said when he visited e operator's premises in ay, he found the general conNon of the vehicles to be Ion He issued one immediate id two delayed prohibitions. Other vehicles would also have been given prohibitions if defects had not been rectified on the spot. The maintenance records were sparse and the facilities and staff were inadequate.

Mr D. Lewis, transport and plant manager,, said he had been appointed in November, 1974, and had since built the fleet up from two vehicles to six. He realised at the time he took over that the premises were inadequate. Because of this he had arranged for Alfreton Transport Ltd to carry out the maintenance of the fleet.

That company ran into labour problems, which led at the beginning of 1975 to it dismissing its drivers and reduc. ing its maintenance staff. As a result it was unable to properly fulfil its contract to maintain the vehicles. As •a temporary measure, he had attempted to undertake the maintenance 'himself, with the aid of three fitters.

The situation was aggravated when two of the fitters suddenly left. He felt one of the reasons why they had done so were the working conditions at the premises.

New workshop facilities were to be constructed on an industrial estate in Chesterfield in the near future.

Alfreton Transport now had a full complement of fitters.
