Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN a new Borg and Beck clutch, known as the A.S., developed by Automotive Products Co., Ltd., Leamington Spa, the transmission of the drive from the cover pressing to the pressure plate is through four pairs of tempered-steel straps. One end of each pair of straps' is riveted to the cover flange whilst the other end is bolted to the pressure plate.

To preVent disturbing the concentric position of the pressure plate when the clutch is released, the straps are arranged tangentially. The centring action of the drive straps does not depend on the tightness of the rivets and bolts, because, to move the pressure plate off centre, it would be necessary that the length of two or more straps should change, which is not possible.

As there is no rubbing contact between the pressure plate and the clutch cover, it is claimed that friction, rattles and squeaks are eliminated. The clutch is being made in 12-in. and 13-in.., sizes.

For petrol-engine service, the 12-in. clutch will take a maximum torque of 250 lb.-fL, and the larger clutch 290 lb.-ft. The respective figures for oilengined vehicles are 210 lb.-ft. and 245 lb.-ft.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE URGES ROAD WORKS •

" WE appreciate that economic difficulties must of necessity delay the commencement of the suggested

road improvement schemes. Unless the speed of London traffic is to be slowed down gradually over the years, however, a start must be made soon lo give effect to our recommendations."

This statement is contained in the annual report of the London and Home Counties Traffic Advisory Committee for the period 1950-51. It adds: " in previous reports we have expressed our views regarding the restrictions on local authorities' expenditure for road repairs, but we feel we must stress that some relaxation of these restrictions is vitally necessary in the interests of road safety, efficiency and economy."

During the period under review, the committee examined stopping places in 363 localities, and made recommendations in respect of 918 bus stops, 49 trolleybus stops and 18 tram stops.
