Turnover and profit up at Maxi

IRVINE, AYRSHIRE-BASED Maxi Haulage has revealed improved turnover and profit in its latest accounts tor the year ended 30 September 2009.

Gerry Atkinson, chairman of the firm's parent company Maxi Group, attributes the 9% rise in turnover up to £34.7m from £31 .9m-to aggressive cost cutting and new business wins, particularly in its Irish unit loads operation.

The cost control has taken two key forms, says Atkinson: improved fuel economy and cutting empty running. The firm has been trialling Volvo's Dynafleet system at its Wrexham site, which has improved fuel consumption by an average of 8%. This will now be rolled out across the rest of the fleet.

Atkinson adds that backloading on its unit load business has been increased by 25%.

"Many of our major customers' business levels have significantly reduced," says Atkinson. "However, our management team worked extremely hard to identify new opportunities while maintaining the highest levels of service."
