This year's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Commercial Vehicle show featured the launch of Project Raja. This is an initiative from Woburn Safari Park and wellknown industry names including Christian Salvesen, Don-Bur, Leyland Daf, Michelin and the Ray Smith Croup.
It aims to halt the decline of the Asian elephant whose total population in the wild numbers less than 40,000, compared with 600,000 African elephants.
Raja, a five-year-old hull elephant, has been imported along with females Chandrika and Damini to Woburn from a logging camp in West Bengal. In five to 10 years' time, when he reaches sexual maturity. Raja will be transferred in the Elephant Transporter to mate with females in other collections.
By swapping males between collections the Elephant Transporter will help to minimise potential problems caused by in-breeding and should create a healthier population in captivity.
