Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Derbyshire aggregates firm Stancliffe Stone says the reopening of two dormant quarries near Bakewell will safeguard 90 jobs and protect the delivery contracts it has with around 10 local hauliers.

But the company still faces opposition to its plans from local residents who say the quarries—which have not been worked for 40 years—will be a blot on the landscape.

Stancliffe, which specialises in dimensional gritstone, has submitted an application to the Peak District National Park Authority to extract 2.4-million tonnes of stone over the next 40 years from the quarries near the village of Stanton Lees.

Stancliffe Stone managing director Kathy Donnelly does not expect the quarries to generate new jobs or contracts, "We are not expanding our total ouput, just redistributing it across other quarries," she explains.

"However," she adds, "we are a large employer in this area and the reopening of these quarries would enable us to safeguard jobs and contracts."
