Around half of the respondents want the Home Office to provide statistics on the types of trucks stolen and from where they were taken. They say this would help them push for lower insurance premiums on the trucks least likely to be stolen.

Our survey comes as police attempt to improve matters by setting up communication channels on truck theft between county forces.

There are also plans to bring worldwide Customs agencies into the fight against truck theft by checking the international trade in vehicles and parts. Police believe professional gangs of criminals steal vehicles to order or for immediate strip-down and shipment out of the country.

Insurance companies estimate that commercial vehicles worth nearly .C100m are stolen in Britain every year.
