Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ABUS driver who challenged Glasgow Corporation's closed shop principle and tried to form his own breakaway union (COMMERCIAL MOTOR, March 18) had an appeal against dismissal turned down on Monday. The driver, Mr. James Scott, was told by the Corporation's establishment committee that because he refused to rejoin the TGWU it could only recommend his dismissal and put him on a month's notice.

A few months ago, when the transport department revised its timetables, Mr. Scott helped to form a breakaway group which called itself the Association of Bus Crews. Because of non-payment of union dues he was lapsed from the TGWU after 13 weeks, and as he refused to join again, the Corporation rule that employees must be members of their appropriate union was then invoked and Mr. Scott was sacked.
