George Harris is intensely proud of his trucks. Their appearance is important to him, and as we walk round the yard he explains how he and his dad first came up with the red, white and blue livery as a change from the firm's original understated blue.
He mentions that it has been tweaked recently to incorporate the web address and reckons this has improved its appearance too. because previously "there was too much empty space".
This, for him, is one of the reasons for being involved: "I get a real buzz out of seeing the trucks out on the road — if I spot one and it looks good then that's what it's about. It makes me glad to be part of lt. And in the 15 years I've been here I can honestly say that I've always felt that.
"Never mind Stobart spotting, I want my kids to be into Harris spotting."
To this end, the firm regularly attends Truckfest South West in Shepton Mallet, to boost its business profile and also to socialise. This year 12 members of the Harris team went, including one of the directors.
George concludes: "It's a strange thing... they go and spend the next six months saying how good it was and the next six months saying how they're looking forward to it."
