Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Kidds, 30; CRL, 30 AREA OF EXPERTISE: Multi-drop deliveries Sponsored by -+ Freight Best Practice

Its not every day the government gives some of your taxes back, but the Freight Best Practice initiative was set up to give free advice to operators to help improve their efficiency. In the second of eight case studies we look at two companies which concentrated on their wheel alignment...

Who:

KiddsTranspor is a Lancaster-based delivery company employing 30 drivers.

CRL Distribution (Co-operative Retail Logistics Distribution) is the delivery arm of the Co-co.

Fleet:

KiddsTransport, 26 tractor units, four rigids and 80 trailers: CRL Distribution, four artics and 26 rigids.

Business:

KiddsTransport handles daily multi-drop deliveries around the North-West. CRL Distribution is the delivery arm of the Co-op and ensures Co-op outlets are kept stocked up with fresh, chilled and frozen foods.

Objective:

In setting up wheel alignment programmes both companies set out to • Cut fuel consumption • Reduce wear and tear on mechanical components • Increase tyre life. CRL Distribution was tackling a specific problem when it introduced the wheel alignment initiative; one of its vehicle was wearing out its tyres much faster than its stablemates.

Results:

KiddsTransport • One vehicle's fuel consumption has been slashed from 6.5mpg to 9.0mpg • Significant fuel savings overall

average fuel consumption is now 8.5mpg; a saving of 3.8-18.6% on artics and 3-11% on rigids • Major increases in tyre life steered axle tread life up by 22%; drive axles by 10%; wide singles by 15% • Reduced driver fatigue with anecdotal evidence that the vehicles have become easier to drive.

CRL Distribution By using laser wheel alignment CRL has been able to identify where the fault lay with its tyres' service life and how it could be corrected. Other benefits have included • Increased tyre lifesteering tyre life is up by 100%; drive axles by 14%

• Enhanced vehicle safety because the wheels do not overheat as easily • Reduced driver fatigue.

As well as highlighting the excellent practice of these two companies, the FBP publication outlines the process of laser wheel alignment and sets out the costs for various chassis configurations. Advice is provided on how often wheel alignment should be carried out, and the operational benefits are summarised.
