I read with interest that the French haulage association are urging the French government to push fora pan-European reduction on fuel tax (CM 31 Aug-6 Sept).

And I also read that the FNTR spokesman says that motorists can chose what type of car and engine they want and how often they can use it while hauliers don't have a choice.

I was a Class I HGV driver until a few years ago when I had an accident. As a result I need my car to go everywhere. I can't choose when and when not to use it so I think it's about time that they stopped saying "essential user" and got all motorists behind the campaign.

I would think that it would put a lot more weight behind the fuel duty problems and get us where we are supposed to be: that is, in line with the rest of Europe.

So next time you're moaning about fuel prices spare a thought for disabled people, because they are essential users too and so are a lot of other people in this country. Ernie Brooks,

Doncaster, South Yorkshire, PS: Keep up the good work. I Still buy Commercial Motor each week and always will. Ed: Thanks for your loyalty. It's good to know that veterans such as yourself still keep in touch with the industry.
