FTER a detailed technical discussion with Austin technicians on the leaf-spring suspension fitted to the nv Gipsy rigid-axle vehicles,.I was left in no doubt that provides greater stability and improves 'adhesion, comtred with the independently 'sprung type, when there is agonal loading of the wheels. But having no doubt is not Jite the same as knowing. Now I'm sure!

A fortnight ago, I drove a : short wheelbase leafer a tmber of times round the Austin test course in Marlbrook .uarry, four -miles from Longbridge and later an independit model for one lap at a lower speed.

This is a really cruel course with near vertical ups and owns, deep potholes, wide gullies and oceans of mud, and ie leafer rode better and was easier to control, particularly ten the vehicle dived diagonally into rutted or soggy round. So it's back to leaf springs if you want them— rid I think a lot of people will. The leaf is a simple thing, ut there's more to it than that—a lot I can't understand. Vhy should a relatively narrow spring base be a good thing, r example? I don't know, but it works.

A N interesting conversation took place between a lady applicant and the West Midland Deputy -Licensing Authority, Mr. R. Hall recently, when the lady in question was applying for the modification of a B licence to carry "goods for the Birmingham Syphon Co., The Mint,

Birmingham, Ltd., and Delta Enfield Rolled Metals, Ltd., within 25 miles."

Asked what she was carrying for the Syphon Company, she replied, "Rubbish." The transcript then reath as follows:— Q. What are you carrying at the moment?

A. I am restricted to rubbish.

Q. What do you carry for the Mint?

A. Rubbish.

Q. Within 25 miles?

A. Yes, rubbish, nothing but rubbish.

IT is rumoured that tests are being conducted in America to determine whether eating sweets helps drivers to avoid accidents. A research group believes that drivers who fall asleep at the wheel do So partly because their blood sugarlevel has dropped too low!
