BRITI.SH Customs and Excise investigators in Northern Ireland have launched a campaign to trap fuel " doctors "—the owners or crews of heavy vehicles who have been cheating the Revenue authorities out of thousands of pounds. In ono year, the loss to the Revenue is estimated at £10,000.
The campaign has meant the introduction to the roads of Northern Ireland of a new vehicle--a special road fuel testing unit which provides "on the spot" tests. Customs officials are challenging commercial vehicles with diesel engines and taking samples from the fuel tanks.
The samples undergo a number of chemical tests to determine whether or not the ftiel has. been "doctored." The officers working on the mobile laboratory can tell within minutes whether the fuel has been mixed with duty-free oil. . The Customs' testing unit can defeat attempts to deceive by drivers who remove tell-tale colouring from illegal mixtures. It is intended that the unit will operate throughout Northern Ireland indefinitely because of its success.
