Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IT was no part of a Licensing 1 Authority's duty to change a contract-A licence when the parties to it were working amicably, the North Western Deputy Licensing Authority said last week when he refused an application by Mr. J. Lucketti, Rochdale, for a new B licence for a vehicle of 2i tons.

Mr. H. A. Kershaw, for the applicant, said that on May 17 he took out a contract-A licence for work for the Rochdale Brick Co. Because of the bad weather, the vehicle had not been fully employed, and as there was also likely to be a slack period in the winter, Mr. Lucketti was now asking for a B licence to serve both the company and a bleach works. Extra work would be mainly internal. The brick company were willing to release him, provided that the vehicle was available to their' when needed.

Mr. P. Kershaw, for the British Transport Commission, said that the applicant sought a B licence after only four months' work under , contract-A licence. At present the brick company had an absolute right to the vehicle, and it was obvious that they must have a haulier who was immediately available. There was no evidence that the special service obtained under contract would continue under B licence.

Messrs. T. Hancock, Stretford, also objected.

70 FREELINFS FOR AUCKLAND

SEVENTY Daimler Freeline singledeckers have been supplied to Auckland, New Zealand, to increase the number of such vehicles in the fleet of the Auckland Transport Board to 160. The all-metal 44-seat bodies were supplied by Saunders-Roe (Anglesey), Ltd., and all but one have been exported in knocked-down form.

New features include jack-knife doors in place of the sliding type. Bodies were jig-built to afford interchangeability, and were made in six main parts —two sides, floor, roof and front and rear ends. Complete units can easily be replaced in the event of damage.

MORE OIL FUEL SOLD

DELIVER1ES of oil fuel to road transport operators in the first six months of this year, at 866,427 tons, were 12.9 per cent, higher than in the comparable period of 1955.

The demand for petrol rose by only 3.1 per cent., mainly because, state the Petroleum Information Bureau, the use of second-grade petrol by commercial users continues to decline. Conversion to oilers underlies these trend,,.

LONGER B.M.C. WARRANTY

THE British Motor Corporation have extended the period of their warranty for exported commercial vehicles from six months to a year. All sales since August 1 this year are affected. Commercial vehicles sold at home are already covered by a year's guarantee.
