value of Dm. has been placed with Henry Meadows, Ltd., Wolverhampton, by Automobile Products, Ltd., of Bombay, India. It is for Meadows 330 oil engines and 250 C5 gearboxes, in knock-down form for assembly in India.
This is the second £1m. order to be placed this year by the Meadows Indian agents. To deal with the order, Meadows have increased their works staff by approximately 10 per cent. It is hoped that within the next few years Automobile Products, Ltd., will be producing Meadows oil engines from locally made components, a start in this direction already having been made.
The order was announced last week by Mr. A. D. Mackay, managing director, on the occasion of the introduction of the four new engines described in last week's issue of The Commercial Motor.
At the same time, Mr. Mackay
referred to developments taking place with the Pescara free-piston engine. Air compressor units are already.in production at Wolverhampton, and work will commence shortly on a gasifier engine for automotive use. The Free Piston Engine Co., Ltd., associated with Henry Meadows, Ltd., are developing these units.
This gasifier will be under 6 in. in diameter and suitable for use in goods vehicles and earth-moving machinery. It produces a mixture of air and exhaust gases which is used to rotate a small gas turbine connected to the road wheels.
The advantages of this method of propulsion are the good torque characteristics, good thermal efficiency, absence of mechanical linkage between engine and road wheels and the wide range of liquid fuels usable in the engine. Parallel developments are taking place in the U.S.A. and France.
