TRAILER THEFT is massively under-reported, despite the threat of terrorists using a simple tipper for a dirty bomb attack, says Robin Dickeson of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Speaking at a vehicle crime conference last week, the SMMT's manager of commercial vehicle affairs also warned that a dire lack of trailer registration in this country is creating a security threat.

Dickeson said he didn't wish to cause panic, but the potential use of a fertiliser-based explosive involving a trailer must be addressed: "A tipping trailer has a payload of 25 tonnes potentially. A warhead payload used against Iraq is less than a tonne. That trailer is largely unidentifiable. I think that's verging on the irresponsible in this day and age."

Dickeson added: "Trailer registration is important — evidence shows it cuts crime. It won't stop crime, but it will help police officers trying to fight it."

Dickeson also complained about spiralling insurance premiums in the industry, despite operators' efforts to introduce anti-theft protection: "Many truck manufacturers have invested heavily insecurity and worked with the insurance industry'sThatcham centre to meet its recommendations. But so far there is no sign of insurance premiums reflecting this investment."
