Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

III Last week Commercial Motor published a story in our Legal News section concerning an application for an Operator's Licence by Sheffield Haulier Anthony Drewitt, trading as Ants Haulage.

This article stated that Mr Drewitt had passed his CPC exam while serving a prison sentence for smuggling a truckload of cigarettes. It went on to claim that Mr Drewitt had been jailed for 27 months in 1997 after being convicted at Croydon Crown Court on three counts of smuggling 2200,000 worth of cigarettes. It concluded by stating that the Deputy Traffic Commissioner held that Mr Drewitt's repute had been tarnished.

CM now knows this to be completely false. Mr Drewitt has never been to prison. He has never faced prosecution for smuggling cigarettes and he has never been convicted of such an offence. The Deputy Traffic Commissioner made no findings that Mr Drewitt's repute had been tarnished.

CM wishes to withdraw these allegations about Mr Drewitt unreservedly. It would also like to apologise to Mr Drewitt for this error and for the distress and embarrassment which this article caused him. It also regrets the damage done to the reputation both of Mr Drewitt and of Ants Haulage.
