Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

September 1998, but year-on-year sales are still down for most manufacturers. Latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show a general slowdown in sales, though new models have helped some manufacturers to increase their share.

Light van sales have fallen by just over 2% during 1999—Ford has suffered particularly badly, as it comes to the end of the current Transit's model life—though Renault has bucked the trend with its Clio and Kangoo vans. In the panel van sector Vauxhall has done well with the Movano, more than doubling sales, while the Sevel vans (from Fiat, Citroen and Peugeot) have been selling strongly.

At the heavy end of the market year-to-date sales have fallen by 2.5%, with the mainstream models from Noce Ford and Leyland Daf taking the brunt of it But a few manufacturers have managed to boost sales: Renault, Foden, MAN and Volvo can all point to better figures.
