by Grant Prior • Job uncertainty faces 30 drivers this Christmas as cut backs by chemicals giant Du Pont swing into action.
The firm is closing down a nylon plant in Pontypool and scaling down operations at factories in Gloucester, Doncaster and Wilton in a cost cutting exercise.
United Transport holds the haulage contract at Pontypool and Gloucester employing eight drivers at each site delivering 90 tonnes of nylon fibre daily.
And Preston firm Alexandra Molynetuc Haulage has 12 drivers working from Du Pont's Doncaster plant.
Transport work at Wilton is carried out by a host of load hauliers who "will all be affected in some way," says Du Pont. United Transport is holding a series of meetings with the chemicals firm this week.
Area manager Colin Powell says : "We don't know exactly what will happen and things will become clearer after the meetings."
AMII managing director John Stanway says : "I don't think we will be entirely immune from the effects of this. We employ 12 drivers on the contract carrying out an average of 15 deliveries a day. I'm sincerely hoping it won't be too harmful to us."
The nylon fibres are delivered in pallet-sized bales by AMI-I's fleet of 38tonners.
Du Pont will be implementing the closures before the end of the year leading to nearly 900 job losses among factory workers.
