uOLLOWING the successful operation of a 6,000-loaf bulk bread transporter on a BMC 7-ton chassis, W. C. Robertson (Carlisle) Ltd., have designed the 7,200-loaf transporter illustrated here. Built on an Albion Super Reiver RE31L chassis supplied by Millburn Motors (Carlisle) Ltd. and constructed by R. Hind Ltd., the new vehicle has a US Industries tail-lift which is used to load and unload the wheeled racks; the racks themselves are interchangeable with those in the earlier vehicle.

The 1-ton electro-hydraulic lift has been modified to provide guidance for the racks; these can be transferred from or to a loading bank or pavement from the side at any height up to vehicle floor level. The driver operates the lift by a remote-control switch and with the assistance of one packer can load the vehicle in 20 min. The vehicle is operated from the Carlisle headquarters to the Robertson depot on the. East coast, where the load is removed and replaced by the previous day's racks, which now contain empty bread trays; return loading takes about an hour. The company estimates that this is only a third of the time needed to load by hand, and most of the effort associated with hand loading is now absent.
