Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LAST Friday the legal and Parlia mentary committee of Brighton Corporation recommended that a scheme should be carried through for amalgamating the municipality's tramways and the local bus services of Thomas Tilling, Ltd. It is understood that it is proposed to sell the two undertakings to a new company having five directors, two representing the corporation and three nominated by the Tilling company. The annual profits of the new undertaking would be divided in the proportions of 6-17th s to the corporation, and the remainder to Thomas Tilling, Ltd.

Although Hove Corporation is not B32 concerned in the present scheme, provision is, we understand, to be made for that authority to acquire an interest in the company at a later date, if it be desired to do so.

A scheme on these lines has, of course, been put into force at Keighley, whilst, as reported on another page, it is believed that York Corporation will be

i

recommended shortly to enter to a similar arrangement.

LICENSING APPEAL: CURIOUS SITUATION.

A CURIOUS situation has arisen in

the Isle of Wight, in connection with licensing. Certain operators were granted 1932 licences, a condition being that they must give protection to some small firms. We understand that these operators accepted the licences, but they appealed against that part relating to protection and are still running under the 1932 licences, but are not affording protection. They contend that they are perfectly in order in taking this action, by reason of the fact that they have appealed, and we are informed that the Southern Traffic Commissioners have upheld their contention.
