Full Details of the 5-cwt. and l2-cwt. Vans Which are Well Designed and Equipped and Backed Up by an Excellent Service Organization

FOR some time it has been anticipated that having introduced an 8 h.p. motorcar, the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., 88, Regent Street, London, W.1, would employ this chassis, or an adaptation of it, as the basis of a light delivery van. With the advent of the Ford Motor Show, which opened yesterday at the White City, London, the company announces such a vehicle, and we are in a position to give a full account of it. The likelihood of this development was predicted in our issue of September 2.

The chassis, of orthodox yet ingenious design, has a wheelbase of 7 ft. 6 ins., the track being 3 ft. 9 ins., and it weighs about 952 lb. It has a foureylindered engine of 2.23-in, bore and 3.64-in, stroke, the Treasury rating being 7.96 h.p. The cylinder head is detachable, the cylinders being cast en bloc, together with the upper half of the crankcase. The engine has three rubber supports, and its crankshaft lies in three bearings of 1g in. diameter, the crank-pin diameter being 1, in. Aluminium-alloy pistons with three pressure and one scraper rings are fitted.

Lubrication is by a submerged geartype pump to camshaft, main and connecting-rod bearings. Cooling water is circulated on the thermo-siphon principle, and there is a two-blade fan driven by a V-type belt. A downdraught carburetter and a Ford battery and coil-ignition set with automatic advance are fitted, also a Ford dynamo and starter.

The three-speed gearbox provides ratios of 5.43, 9.58 and 16.67 to 1 for , ward, and 21.80 to 1 reverse. The gears are of the synchro-mesh type, ensuring easy, silent changes ; the constant-mesh and second-speed pinions have helical teeth. The clutch is a dry, single-plate unit.

The rear axle is of the three-quarterfloating, spiral-bevel type and has roller bearings throughout, whilst the front axle is an ordinary I-section beam.

The foot brake is applied by physical effort and affects all four wheels, the cast malleable-iron drums being 10 ins. in diameter, whilst the lining width is 14 in. Transverse cantilever springs are fitted, the front spring having eight n30 1/-in, leaves and the rear 10 14-in. leaves. Both axles have Ford recoil dampers. Electrically welded wire-spoke wheels with well-base rims are fitted and have 4.50-in. by 17-in. tyres, and the steering connections are rubber mounted.

The overall length, width and height of the 5-cwt. van are, respectively, 11 ft. 8 ins., 4 ft. 6 ins., and 5 ft. 5 ins., the corresponding dimensions of the loading space being 4 ft. 3 ins., 3 ft. 7i ins., and 3 ft. 3i ins., which gives a volume of 50 cubic ft The rear opening is 3 ft. 6i ins, wide and 3 ft. 6,1 in. high. The list price of the van is £113.

The latest 12-cwt, van embodies a modification of the new 24 h.p. motorcar chassis, the wheelbase being 8 ft. 10 ins.,

as against 8 ft. 7iins. Whilst buyers may specify the 14.9 h.p. engine, this is not, generally speaking, recommended by the company. In the case of the bigger engine, the bore is 3.875 ins. (in the smaller engine it is 3.055 ins.), the stroke being 4.25 ins, and the Treasury rating 24.03 h.p., whilst a maximum power of 52 b.h.p. is developed at 2,600 r.p.m. The smaller engine develops 40 4' bap. at 3,000 r.p.m.

The three main bearings are 2 ins. and the crankpins 14 in. in diameter ; light-alloy pistons are fitted, and there is pressure lubrication. In the case of

this van the cooling-water circulation is assisted by a centrifugal impeller. The Ford carburetter is pump-fed from a 14gallon tank under the seat.

. The electrical equipment includes a Ford six-volt 80-amp.-hour battery, dynamo and starter with automaticadvance coil ignition.

Through a single-plate clutch, the drive is taken to a three-speed gearbox and thence to a three-quarter-floating spiral-bevel axle giving a minimum road clearance of 81 ins. The axle ratio is 4.56 to 1, the indirect forward gears being 7.31 and 12.85 to 1, whilst the reverse ratio is 15.41 to 1. Again, the gears are of the synchro-mesh type.

The foot brake acts on all four wheels, the cast malleable drums being 12 ins. in diameter and 14 in. in effective width:

Transverse cantilever springs are fitted, the front spring being 14 in. and the rear spring 21 in. wide, whilst the

wheels, of the Ford electrically welded wire-spoke type with well-base rims, carry at the front 5.25-in. by 18-in. tyres, and at the rear 6.00-in. by 18-in. tyres.

The chassis weight is 1,718 lb., and the complete van is listed at £168. The turning circle has a diameter of 39 ft. The overall length, width and height of the van are, respectively, 13 ft. 10 ins., 5 ft. 7 ins., and 6 ft. 5 ins., the corresponding dimensions of the loading space being 4 ft. 11i ins., 4 ft. 6 ins., and 3 ft. 114 ins., thus giving a capacity ,

of 86 cubic ft. Either a door or a shutter can be fitted at the rear.
