• A Shropshire company which used a JCB Fastrac agricultural tractor and trailer to carry for hire or reward has been ordered to pay fines and costs of £250.
Appearing before the Telford magistrates, GH Davies Farms, of Condover, Shrewsbury, initially denied using a vehicle without an 0-licence or tachograph. The company changed its plea to guilty at the start of the rase.
Prosecuting for the Vehicle Inspectorate, Michael McKnight said the rig had been used to move sugar beet 5Icm from a storage depot at Atcham to the British Sugar Corporation factory at Alsoott.
Normally Fastracs, which were sophisticated agricultural tractors, fell outside the provisions of the Transport Act when used for agricultural purposes, said McKnight. But on this occasion his contention was that the Fastrac and trailer had been used for pure haulage.
For the company, it was said that the tractor driver had been asked to take the beet to the factory by the company which ran the storage depot, having earlier delivered the beet to the depot. It was conceded that the company had received payment for the movement from Atcham to Alscott. The magistrates fined the company £75 per offence with £100 costs.
