• Scania has posted disappointing financial results for the first nine months of 1996, as the introduction of the 4-Series range cost around 300 million Swedish Kroner (about £27m) in the third quarter alone. Pretax earnings for JanuarySeptember were SKr2,142m (£194m), clown 39% on the same months in 1995, with Scania barely in the black for the third quarter.
The cost of the 4-Series changeover has been put at around £40m for 1996, and there was a production shortfall of about 500 vehicles. But sales in the UK—Scania's largest customer—rose by 9% despite a market downturn. European truck sales were fairly strong, with the share increasing from 14.4% to 15.4%.
