ENGINENGINE valves may be reconditioned by turning with the .refacing machines being marketed by E. F. Allchin and Co., Ltd., 253 Bordesley Green, Birmingham, 9. Advantages . are stated to include the absence of belts on the drive arrangements and that no stones or grinding wheels need to be dressed after cutting. No lubricants or coolants are needed, and the tools are capable of servicing up to 300 valves.

Small Models can deal with valve heads of Up to 2:1 'in, diameter, whilst a larger model will accommodate valves Of up to 8 in. diameter. Operation of the refacing maehine, and the seat-cutting machine, is automatic. Angles are pre-set, although on the refacer they can be varied in 15-minute gradations up to 1°. It is contended that hand lapping is unnecessary.

The equipment is reasonably priced and no accessories other than spare cutters are required.

Bench Grinder

pR10ED at £19 15s. complete with a coarse and a fine grinding wheel, a 7-in, double-ended bench grinder has been introduced by S. N. Bridges and Co., Ltd., York Way, London, S.W.11. The grindstones can easily be replaced by alternative attachments such as polishers or buffers. The machine has a 1-h.p. motor and consumes 540 watts.

To allow a small power drill normally fitted with a On. chuck to be used for drilling large holes at low speeds, the company offer at kJ 18s. 9d. an attachment providing for a 4 1 reduction in speed and to which a On. chuck (or a i-in.) may be fitted. This unit is suitable for most popular makes of drill.

Boxed Buses

OFparticular interest to overseas operators in countries where only. semi-skilled labour is obtainable, "A Bus In a Box" is a booklet which describes the knocked-down bodywork construction kits for passenger vehicles made by Metal Sections, Ltd., Oldbury, Birmingham.

In a 175-cu.-ft. box may be contained a set of parts for a 33-seater, comprising skeleton framing panels and mouldings, screens and windows, seat frames, Pop rivets and tools, wheel boxes and step pans. Only spanners are required for the construction.

The company also make kits for goods vehicles.

Low-priced Radio DUSH-BUTTON tuning, an output I stage incorporating transistors, printed circuitry and a price of £26 5s. including purchase tax, are attractive features of a vehicle radio set produced by Pye Telecommunications, Ltd., Cambridge.

Known as the Touchbutton Pyeway, the radio covers the medium and long wavebands with four easily pre-set push

buttons to select stations on the medium wave and one button for long wave. The set, which operates from a .12 v, supply, has a variable tone control and gives an output of 2 watts for a consumption of I amp.

Housed separately from the tuner unit, which measures 7 in. by .7 in, by 2 in., the output stage is contained in a box 21 in. by 2i in. by 7 in. long.

Removing Steering Wheels • •

THE latest piece of transport service equipment from J. W. Pickavant and Co., Ltd., Bow Street, Birmingham, 1, is a hydraulic steering wheel puller with rubber-protected steel jaws which may quickly be adjusted to suit different sizes of boss. Required effort is provided by the company's Apkoway No. 40 rain. The price of the puller with ram is £6 18s. 6d. arid without £4 18s, 6d.

Easier Servicing

A12-VOLT seven-plate battery known as the 57 has been produced by Joseph Lucas, Ltd., Great King Street, Birmingham, 19. Instead of individual threaded vent plugs for each cell, the plugs are each a push fit and are attached to a hollow manifold which also interconnects them. This simplifies servicing and is said to give an enlarged gassing area whilst minimizing acid loss. An anti-splash guard fitted inside controls surging and prevents damage to the separators when topping up.

Another Lucas innovation is a triangular reflex reflector for attachment to the hub caps of a vehicle to give warning of its presence to other vehicles approaching from the .side at night. The amber reflectors are mounted in chromiumplated covers and are attached to the hub caps by single bolts. They cost 13s. 6d. a pair,

Reducing Risk SPECIAL hardeners for curing epoxide resin, as used to make plastics tools, :Ire being supplied by .Leicester Loved and Co., Ltd., North Baddesley, Southampton, which eliminate the risk of skin and eye irritation often associated with the use of epoxide-resin compositions. Plastics tools are widely used for forming metal, but their employment has sometimes been rejected because of hazards.
