rIFTY-SIX summonses faced

G. and H. Kettle, hauliers, LangwithJunction, Derbys, when they appeared before Mansfield, Notts, magistrates last week. They admitted 25 of operating unlicensed vehicles, 22 of not complying with their licence conditions, and nine of failing to ensure that records were kept. Fines totalling £111, were imposed, together with costs of £18 8s. 6d.

Mr. E. Wurzel, prosecuting, said that on February 28 the Kettles' contract A. licence, covering about 20 vehicles working for the 'National Coal Board, was due to expire. They applied for a renewal to the East Midland Licensing Authority four days in advance, but were told to approach the Yorkshire Authority.

The application was received in the Yorkshire Area on March 11, and later the Kettles were asked for licence fees of £120. They did not hand this in until May 5, so the licence was not issued until May 8.

Between February and March, four

lorries and a trailer had been used, and 22 of the summonses related to their operation. When the licence was issued it authorized haulage for the N.C.B. only, but vehicles had been working for the Mansfield Haulage Co.

The' Kettles also held a B licence, which had its conditions altered on July 4, but before that date the vehicle concerned had been operated three times without a licence. Again, it was used for unauthorized work—carrying bricks for the N.C,B.

Mr. E. Hooton, defending, claimed that only technical offences had been committed. At the time of the offences, the N.C.B. had no work for the Kettles, so they had carried goods for Mansfield Haulage.' " In another case, Mansfield Haulage were fined a total of £7 for operating unlicensed vehicles. It was stated that they applied for a licence covering one vehicle to he transferred to two smaller ones, but without waiting for a decision they operated all three.
