A S an addition to their established

Paxit range of barrier compression high-capacity refuse collection vehicles. Dennis Bros., Ltd., Guildford, have introduced a forward and rearward tipping model. Known as the Tippax, it has been on show during the past week at the Public Works and Municipal Services Exhibition at Olympia. The steel refuse body of the new model, which has a capacity of 20 cu. yd., is curved at the front to allow it to rotate on rollers when forward tipping is in progress to compact the refuse. The load is discharged by normal rearward tipping when the entire rear portion of the body is pivoted upwards by a hydraulic ram. A dustless loading shutter is incorporated in the design and hydraulic loading gear for l cu. yd. capacity storage bins is used. The shutter may be raised to 'permit manual loading, making the vehicle suitable for dual-purpose operation. Control of all tipping operations is effected from inside the four-man cab through a single lever which actuates locking pins. The chassis which forms the basis for the Tippax is of conventional design, powered either by .a Perkins P6(v) oil engine or a Dennis petrol engine. A four-speed gearbox is fitted in either case.

20 TONS HOURLY LOADING RATE

WHEN bulk vehicles are employed for VY the transport of grain, the aim should be to attain a loading rate of 20 tons an hour. This is possible by using overhead delivery bins or elevator feeds. In many cases, elevators, augers or blowers for loading bulk vehicles are more simple and inexpensive means than the use of overhead delivery bins. These points are made in a booklet, "Bulk Handling Equipment," issued by the National Association of Corn and Agricultural Merchants, Cereal House. Mark Lane, London, E.C.3, following a survey carried out among leading members. It is considered desirable that vehicles which deliver bulk animal feeding stuffs should be so constructed that the blower discharge apparatus may also be used for sucking in grain which may be collected at the farm.

MOTORWAYS TO REMAIN DARK "

I AM not at present satisfied that continuous lighting on motorways is required," Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport, said in the House of Commons last week. Lighting requirements on motorways were being studied jointly by the Road Research Laboratory, and experience on the Preston by-pass, which at first would not be lighted, should provide useful data. Mr. Watkinson had been asked to consider continuous lighting of motorways and to install it experimentally on the Preston by-pass.
