Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE UNION OF SHOP, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) says it is optimistic many workers set for redundancy at Wincanton's shared-user home-delivery network will be redeployed in the company.

As reported on www.roadtransport.com. Wincanton is to cut up to 283 jobs — including 161 drivers — at its home delivery unit following a strategic review.

Usdaw national officer Irene Radigan says: "We have not been given sufficient financial information to accept the company's business case for the decision. However, we are optimistic there will be many opportunities to redeploy staff in the organisation."

Wincanton has started a 90-day consultation period with employees that will be affected and their unions.

A company spokesman says: "Customers' volumes have reduced in Wincanton's shared user network and the critical mass no longer exists to provide the national coverage, frequency and minimum service levels required to operate a shared home-delivery service': The company has revealed it will now concentrate on its dedicated home-delivery customer contracts.

Job losses are set to occur at sites in Mossend, Lanarkshire; Thetford, Norfolk; Rugby, Warwickshire; Widnes. Cheshire; Avonmouth, Avon; Greenford, London; Spennymoor, Co Durham and Ford, West Sussex.
