Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Joanna Bourke PALLET FREIGHT specialist Nigel Rice Transport is to offer Driver CPC training to its staff, although drivers will have money deducted from their wages to finance the programme The Beverley, East Yorkshire-based haulier will offer drivers the opportunity to do the CPC course for E1.55 a week, in association with not-for-profit TI R Training Services.

Nigel Rice transport manager Andy Harrison says all 30 drivers have been given the option to have the amount deducted from their weekly wages over a five-year period He says the majority have accepted the offer.

"We will have to finance their time off for doing the course, so this is a 50/50 situation They need the course for their future, and it would not be fair for us to pay for this if they were to leave us You are a fool if you bury your head in the sand over the Driver CPC. which starts in September' Harrison says Fears have been raised of a two tier approach to providing Driver CPC training with some larger firms such as Wincanton and Circle Express, financing the driver training directly.

The Road Haulage Associations policy director. Jack Semple, says "For some larger firms or those heavily involved with unions, it would be easier to recuperate the costs via customers.'

lain Mitchell, managing director at Grangemouth-based John Mitchell, agrees. "We intend to fund our drivers training with some sort of clawbac.k on costs should the driver decide to leave us 'However, we have decided to postpone the CPC training for 12 months because, at this point, it is non-essential, and what with the current economic climate, we can do without the expense"
