Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Scania's Euro-5 range includes EGR in-line five and six-cylinder diesel engines, capable of meeting the limits without after-treatment.

Fundamental to the nine-litre five-cylinder and 13-litre six-cylinder engines is the XPI common-rail injection set-up, which has been developed jointly with Cummins. The system can deliver maximum injection pressure of 2,400 bar, with potential to produce pressures up to 3,000 bar.

The XPI system can deriver multiple injections pilot injection, main injection and post-injection. The postinjection stroke is designed to reduce particulates and NOx and could be used to control exhaust temperature burn off soot from the filter if after-treatment is needed.

The Euro-5 9.3-litre five-cylinder engines produce 230hp, 280hp and 320hp. Two variants comply with the EEV standard, the 230hp and 280hp versions. Scania developed an 8.9-litre EEV variant of the engine by reducing the bore from 130mm to 127mm. This 270hp version is designed to operate on ethanol.

The 12.7-litre six-cylinder Euro-5 engine is available with four Euro-5 outputs 360hp, 400hp, 440hp and 480hp. The 230hp and 280hp 9.3-litre engines are equipped with a maintenance-free particulate filter in order to reach the EEV standard. After-treatment is not required for the Euro-5 EGR engines.

SCR Euro-5 engines are available based on the 12-litre six-cylinder engine and rated at 380hp and 420hp also available as EEV versions. There are also top-of-the-range Euro-5 16-litre V8 500hp, 560hp and 620hp variants, which are expected to continue with SCR.
