lveco has tried to stay one step ahead of its rivals by announcing it would only supply EEV-compliant engines across the company's heavy truck range from the start of this year.

Product director Martin Flach says: "The limit was introduced by optimising combustion. By working on combustion, we've got to EEV levels without adding a particulate filter. We thought we might need a particulate trap, but we've managed to get there without one."

There is one exception in the Iveco EEV line-up. lveco's most powerful truck engine, the 13-litre 560hp Cursor 13, could only meet the EEV limits with a particulate filter. Since between 500 and 600 vehicles were equipped with the engine option across Europe in 2007, the company will only offer Euro-5 variants to avoid additional cost.

The EEV engine range includes lveco's common-rail Tector and unit-injector Cursor engine families. The four-cylinder 3.9-litre Tector is available with power ratings of 140hp. 160hp and 182hp. while the 5.9-litre six-cylinder variant is rated at 217hp, 251hp, 279hp and 299hp. The Cursor in-line six-cylinder unit-injector engine powers the Stralis and Trakker heavy truck ranges. The 7.8-litre 'Cursor 8' engine is available with power ratings of 310hp, 330hp and 360hp. The 10.3-litre 'Cursor 10' engine is rated at either 420hp or 450hp, while the 12.88-litre 'Cursor 13' offers power outputs of 410hp, 450hp, 500hp and 560hp.
