TWO NEW standards dealing with towing the British Standard Automobile series. have been published BS AU 187 specification for tow rope assemblies for towing passenger cars and light vans aims at establishing the minimum requirements for ropes and fittings, if any, which may be used with reasonable safety for towing such vehicles in an emergency. It specifies requirements, including those for certain dimensions, performance and packaging, and for flexible assemblies for towing vans and cars with a maximum gross weight of two tonnes.

Since most imported tow ropes do not meet these requirements, the standard will have a considerable bearing on safety.

BS AU 188 specification for anchorages for towing ropes, cables or bars for road vehicl applies to vehicles with a ma: mum authorised total weight n exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
