Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Rollalong Ltd, of Ringwood, Hants, has developed a new diesel-powered version of its 22-ton universal mobile gantry for handling 20ft ISO containers. The gantry is equipped with a self-contained hydraulic system which provides a lifting speed of about 6ft /min.

Chain sling adjusters enable an end-heavy load to be lifted without any tilt if required, or alternatively will permit a load to be lifted at an angle to suit the rake of the vehicle involved. While not automatic in operation, the chain sling adjusters enable the sling lengths to be varied without the necessity for unshackling.

The adjusters operated on the principle that when no tension is on the chain slings the chains are free to roll through the adjusters, over the pulleys. As soon as lifting commences the chain slings come under tension and, the central pulley being firmly locked, no further movement is allowed. Therefore, with an end heavy load, if the gantry is positioned so that lifting beams and rams arc in line with the estimated centre of gravity of the load, the slings will then, on lifting, lock in the correct ratio to provide a level lift.

A further development of this machine is the addition of a steerable wheel driven by an hydraulic motor connected to the gantry system, enabling the machine to be moved under its own power on concrete surfaces.
