o Of all goods tonnage carried by inland ansport in Britain during 1968,85 per cent • 'eat by road, and over 60 per cent of the In-mileage was by road, too. These figures vealed by the DoE in the latest survey report on goods transport are accompanied by striking figures for the growth of articulation. In the period between 1962 and 1968, the report reveals, the use of articulated vehicles increased threefold.

Another large increase was in the use of heavier vehicles; there was a 133 per cent rise in vehicles weighing 8 tons or more unladen between 1962 and 1967/8. Also significant was an increase—from 48 per cent in 1962 to 60 per cent in 1967/8— in the ton-mile share of vehicles operated for hire and reward vis-a-vis own-account.

Results of the survey will shortly be published in booklet form by the DoE, which is also to make available microfilm results of regional surveys, together with magnetic tape recordings of much of the material.
