Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IT is appropriate that a Materials Handling Exhibition should be held in Glasgow 1 this year as Scotland is one of the most rapidly expanding industrial areas in the United Kingdom. No less than 200 factories have been built on Clydeside since 1960, and it is fair to say that the ebullient materials handling industry has played a part in this welcome development. It is good to know that the sponsoring body, the Institute of Materials Handlidg, has invited members of kindred organizations in the USA, Canada, Japan and Europe to visit the exhibition.

Bristol Metal Contracts Ltd. is demonstrating its Bri-Mec multi-purpose lorry body, an ingenious design with many applications. This is of particular interest, perhaps, to civil engineering contractors. The lorry body—which can be fitte'd to most chassis—is extended and angled to the ground, enabling mobile plant to be driven or winched up the inclined platform. Single-handed loading or offloading is a feature of this interesting development on Stand 49.

"The most up-to-date insulated container in the world " is featured by Anal° Continental Container Services on Stands 104-109. Built of reinforced plastics of high thermal efficiency, a revolutionary temperature-control system is employed, maintaining temperatures at between 30° and 40°F. The new container has been used successfully for chilled meat movements from Northern Ireland to this country.

Calor Gas (Distributing) Co. Ltd. (Stand 61) is demonstrating the versatility of its Calor propane equipment in the operation of a Hyster S20 fork-lift truck and Brimpex hydraulic stacker and selfactuating lifter. The absence of noxious exhaust, reduced running costs, no spillage or pilfering of fuel and easy engine starting are among the many advantages of this equipment.

Ritchie MacKenzie and Co., as agent for Youngs (Lifting Appliances) Ltd., is exhibiting much equipment of interest, to road hauliers, including lorry-mounted winches, rope and chain blocks, and specialized hand-lifting appliances, . on Stand 95.

On Stand 55, John S. Young and Co, (Industrial Services) Ltd., as agent for the British Hoist and Crane Co., is showing 4-ton and 6-ton Iron Fairy diesel hydraulic mobile cranes. The smaller version, called Garnet, is a full-circle slewing machine well suited to confined space work. The 6-ionner is a restricted slewing machine which will move carrying its full load.

George Smith (Compressors) Ltd.— the Scottish agent of R. A. Lister and Co. Ltd.—is exhibiting a wide range of the comprehensive Lister equipment on Stand 64B. including slat conveyors, dieselelectric trucks and tractors and a threewheeled electric axed-platform truck.

A versatile range of side-loaders. in the 2to -8-ton range is featured by Joshua Shaw and SonsLtd. on Stands 75 to 78. Shaw machines incorporate a 230-hour hibrication. system, minimizing servicing and ensuring continuous maximum per

formance. •

Powell Dinfryn Ltd.; on Stand 30, is highlighting two new Dempster-Dino

saur lorry-mounted systems for bulk materials haulage and transfer loading. The new models, stepped up to 11 and 13

tons, sup,i-sede the current 9+-ton load

capacity Ditiosaur. The Dinosaurs are eminently suitable for heavy or bulky; loads in civil engineering and plant movement work, or for movement of scrap metal, waste or refuse. .'• A very wide range of battery electric vehicles, hand trucks and industrial trailers is shown by Brush Electrical

Engineering Co. Ltd. on Stands 10 and 15. Whilst machof the equipment

exhibited is of more interest to warehouse operators, a high-lift, battery-operated platform truck of 2-ton capacity would be a serviceable tool for many hauliers.

A range of Steinboch lorry-loading cranes is displayed by the Scottish distri butors. F. Short Mechanical Handling Ltd., on Stand 93. This German equipment, designed for lorries of more than 3+-ton capacity, is exceptionally flexible in Operation, permitting the whole area of the vehicle to be loaded. The crane's telescopic jib can b. extended or retracted hydraulically, even under load. The•11.1( 2-5 model has a maximum reach of 16 ft. 5 in., and at this extreme radius 440 lb.

Industrial diesel engines of between :38 and 120 b.h.p. made by the Perkins Group will he shown by Perkins Engines Ltd. on Stands 6 and 7, These are suitable for installation in a wide range of handling equip ment ranging from fork-lift trucks to cranes. All Perk ins engines can he supplied tailored to lit individual applications. A range of low-cost " simpli fied " industrial engines, volume produced to basic specifications, enables manufacturers to buy a low-cost power package adaptable to their own needs.

Millburn Motors Ltd„ the sole Scottish distributor of Coventry Climax fork-lift trucks, is displaying on Stand 44 a cross-section of the extensive 42 model range, such as the electric LGEU of 2,000 lb. capacity. the Universal !GE of 4.000 lb. and the Universal Major MSE of 6,00(1 lb.. all fitted with cushion tyres. Four diesel trucks of from 4,000 lb. to 8.000 lb, capacity are shown, together with the model RT electric reach-truck with a capacity of 4,000 lb. at 24 in. load centre. A PF electric platform-truck with a towing capacity of 10 tons, and ancillary handling equipment which Millburn distributes, will also be feat tired.

F. E. Callow (Engineers) Ltd. shows a working high-pressure pneumatic conveying installation suitable for conveying ground meals, plastics, ground limestone, cement and so on at rates up to 30 tons per hour. The complete installation will be re-mutely controlled from a master panel. Ancillary equipment made by Callow will also be shown on Stand 65.

Standardind chains and other equipment made by Renold Chains Ltd. and John Holroyd Lid., with whom a merger was recently effected, are shown on the Renold stand 60). This equipment. much used in mechanical handling applications, includes chains with a breaking load from 3.000 to 85,000 lb.

• Conveyancer-Ravrnon.d , Ltd. shows a range of reach-fork trucks and pbwered pallet-trucks on Stand 23A. Their seated-driver 'reach-fork trucks are " driver engineered" to ensure maximum operating ease. efficiency and .comfort with enhanced productivity. • They are particularly 'suited to warehouse operation. with manoeuvrability in confined spaces a pronounced feature.

On Stand 18. ;Yale and Towne Inc.. makers of materials handling equipmeni .since 1875, and the world's largest producers of industrial trucks and hoisting equipment, are demonstrating an electronic controlled battery electric fork truck of 6:000 lb. capacity. This system gives variable speed control, increased reliability and major savings in battery consumption. Other Yale equipment on display includes the riderdiesel and electric fork trucksup to

10,000 lb. . capacity, and pedestriancontrolled fork-lift pallet and platform trucks.

Tvtatbro Ltd.. on Stand 39, features a 6.000 lb. capacity swing-lift fork truck. Matbro makes engine-driven fork-lift trucks of from 4,000 to 20,000 16. capacity, for indoor and outdoor use.

The Lancer Boss Group is showing (on Stands 31. 32 and 45) the completely new Lancer 1000 series Sideloacler; a heavyduty machine in the 9to 12-ton ninge. Other Lancer side-loaders ranging from the 200 series with capacity up to 4,500 lb. at 18 in. load centre to the 800 series with capacity up to 20,000 lb. at

30 in. load centre are featured. Boss Compact, front-lifttrucks, designed to handle substantial loads: in very confined spaces, are displayed, together with the Boss 22 heavy-duty truck similar -to the heavy recovery vehicles employed in the Mersey tunnel and on the Forth road bridge

Sheivoke and Drewry Ltd., on Stand 58, features the SD Freightlifter Defiant model 96/18 heavy-duty fork-lift truck with a capacity of 18,000 lb. at 24 in. centres. It is equipped with mast for 16 ft. lift. Power-assisted steering permits an outside turning radius of 12+ ft. Th2 Defiant is fitted with -hydraulically operated side-shift/side-tilt mechanism and a fully enclosed driver's cab.

On Stand 66, Wessex Industries (Poole) Ltd., in addition to an established range of battery-electric stillage trucks, platform trucks, battery-electric tractors and industrial trailers, will exhibit one of its new high-low Wrigley Union fork-lift trucks. A two-seater, battery-electric personnel carr:er for inter-department works transport will be shown and also, of particular interest, the new .Elpar Union acro-smooth, battery-electric, heavy-duty fork-lift truck which incorporates outstanding features presenting a new concept in fork-lift truck design.
