it4ENDIP tipper operators and quarrynu. masters in the area held a meeting in Frome last week to exchange views on the question of haulage rates. After the hauliers, headed by Mr. J. F. Cox, the Road Haulage Association's western area secretary, had presented the quarrymen with a schedule of recommended rates it was agreed that the quarrymen would meet representatives of the haulage contractors engaged by them to indicate their views and, where necessary, make suggestions for amendments to the rates they paid. This would be done within a week.
A meeting of a committee of the Mendip tipper operators will. meet next Tuesday (May 18) to consider the quarrymens' replies. It is understood that any negotiated rates uplift will become operative on July 1, 1965,
The Commercial Motor was told by Mr. Cox that last week's meeting was noticeable for the spirit of good intention and co-operation engendered between the parties. A further agreement reached between the sides was for the holding of joint consultations later in the year to further consider the rates and conditions of hiring and to make any necessary adjustments.
