ANOTHER interesting publication by the British Road Federation is a booklet, priced at Is., entitled "Science Looks at Roads.'' This features the activities of the Road Research Laboratory at Harmondsworth.

Many of the experiments there have had practical results, some of which can be seen on the roads now. They include the zebra crossing, the redamber-green timing of traffic signals and even crash helmets for motorcyclists, whilst the forthcoming requirements that nearly all vehicles have two rear lights have followed work in this field.

An interesting point is that in every mile of Central London's streets throughout the rush hours between 200301) people are sitting impatiently in buses, taxis, cars and lorries brought lo a virtual standstill by congestion. It is significant that watchers who stood at 24 sites west of London in the vicinity of halt signs found that 69 per cent, of the traffic approaching main roads from minor ones stopped when there was no other traffic near. Eightythree per cent, halted when there were other vehicles present.

Copies of this booklet have been sent to Members of both Houses of Parliament.
