Brief Details of a MercedesBenz Model for 20-passenger Bodies.

COE of the best-known makes of ILJGerman chassis, and one whiell WC have often admired at the various shows we have visited in the country of its origin, is the Mercedes-Benz, which is marketed in this country by British MercedesBenz, Ltd., King's House, 37, Davies Street, Grosvenor Square, London, W.1.

The particular example with which we are now dealing is that designed for luxurious 20-seater bodies, and the illustration• which accompanies these totes shows such a body, of the Pullman-saloon type, mounted on the chassis in question.

Not the least attractive feature of the etassis is the price, which is 163i, including self-energizing fourwheel brakes, gearbox-driven tyre pump, at instrument board carrying speedometer, switchbox, oil tell-tale, petrol gauge and dashlamp, Bosch horn, electric lighting and starting set, driving mirror and 32-in. by 6-in. or 34-in. by 7-in, pneumatic tyres with spare wheel.

The power unit employed has six

cylinders, cast en bloc with the upper half of the crankcase and having a detachable head in one piece. The bore and stroke are 80 mm. and 130 ram. respectively, giving a capacity of 4,000 c.c. The power output at 2,000 r.p.m. is between 50 b.h.p. and 55 b.h.p.

The main particulars of the e-assis are :—Wheelbase, 13 ft. 4 ins.; track, front 5 ft., rear 5 ft. 3 ins.; ground clearance, 10 ins. ; frame length available for body, 14 ft. 10 ins.; weight of chassis, including all accessories and spares, approximately 30 cwt.

Details of the Chassis.

Reverting to the engine, the valves are arranged side by side with adjustable tappets, and the inlet and exhaust valves are interchangeable. Gears are utilized to drive the camshaft from the rear end of the crankshaft. Situating the timing gen:. at the back of the engine in this manner assists greatly in the reduction of noise. Carburation is

effected by a Solex instrument, and the petrol feed is through an Autovac. The Bosch ignition system has a separate distributor mounted in the centre of the cylinder head. Force feed is adopted for circulating the engine lubricant. A centrifugal pump is utilized for circulating the cooling water and cooling is assisted by a fan.

A single dry-plate clutch conveys the power to a four-speed-andreverse gearbox with nickel-chromesteel pinions ; the light-alloy casing of the gearbox is bolted up as a unit with the engine bell-housing. Behind the gearbox is an enclosed : opeller shaft equipped with two universal joints, but the driving and braking stresses are taken through the rear springs. Incidentally, the final drive is by spiral-bevel gearing. Semi-elliptic springs are provided at both ends.

We have already referred to the four-wheel brakes, but we must mention also that the hand brake acts independently in the rear-wheel drums.
