Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Colin Barnett We might have spent the past few months shivering through the winter, but Thermo King has been busy working on new ways of keeping cool. CM has paid a visit to its factory in wind-swept Galway to check out the lates' products and developments.

Among these are a move into the new-for-Thermo King area of alternatorpowered fridge units; diesel-powered truck and trailer units with significantly reduced running costs; multitemperature systems for trailers and, later in the rim year, trucks; and advances in the field of cryogenic refrigeration.

Control and monitoring electronics have also been improved, including the latest version of the wireless data transfer system R:COM II. All the new products deschbed here will be shown to operators for the first time at the NEC CV Show at the end of April.

Self-powered advances

Star of Thermo Kings trailer product line-up is the new Spectrum range of multi-temperature systems. New remote evaporators, the twin-fan S-2 and triple S-3, can also be doubled-up if required. Compared with the current units they are claimed to provide 30% more cooling capacity with 20% more airflow and 10% higher air speed.

A lot of development has been carried out to ensure not only faster performance but also the minimum possible temperature fluctuation throughout the trailer. Temperature variations can be tightly controlled with the optional Data Acquisition System WAS) monitoring system, including the Smart Reefer MP-IV controller.

Spectrum and the latest SL single-temperature units, identified by the suffix 'e', feature the EMI 3000 extended-mainte nance-interval package. Replacing twin V-belts by single auto-tensioned poly-V belts reduces power loss and increases reliability (the poly-V belts now have the same twoyear or 6,000-hour warranty as the rest of the unit). Improved filtration has doubled lube maintenance intervals to 3.000 hours.

Similar changes to the truck

mounted range have been made in the shape of the new Spectrum TS.

(he smaller oil capacity of the TS's engine mean that lube intervals are 2,000 hours— hence its EMI 2000 package— but the other improvements are the same.

The Spectrum TS will be available with the new Spectrum Controller, a DIN-sized dashmounted unit developed after extensive consultation with drivers and operators.

Our first look at the Controller showed it to be extremely user-friendly, with alarm messages and rectification advice presented in plain language.

Operating buttons, which can be used with gloved hands. are kept to a minimum and are supplemented by just four context-sensitive ''soft keys".
